The International Institute of Humanitarian Law is pleased to announce its
Specialised Courses on the Laws of Armed Conflict for Planners and Executors of Naval and Air Operations. Both courses run concurrently and will be conducted over the period 28 Nov – 2 Dec 2011.
Each course provides planners and executors of naval and air operations with a comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of the Laws of Armed Conflict (LOAC), which will enable them to apply naval and air power in compliance with LOAC in times of armed conflict, whether international or non-international in nature. The courses also consider some of the legal principles and obligations involved in the application of naval and air power in operations that are not subject to LOAC.
Why attend this course?
The LOAC for Planners and Executors of Naval and Air Operations Courses have been revised by our Teaching Expert Group to ensure they are fully up-to-date and relevant for today’s Naval and Air operator. Our Teaching Staff and Facilitators are drawn from experienced senior military legal officers, leading academics practising in the field and experts from international organisations. Topics will be covered using a seminar-based approach to maximise the participant’s ability to find outcome-oriented solutions through the application of the relevant LOAC provisions. The wide range of national and cultural experiences of the participants attending will ensure a superior understanding of the multinational challenge.
Who should attend?
This week long Course is a must for air force and naval officers, military lawyers, civilian legal advisers and government officials with a need for an in-depth knowledge of LOAC as it applies in the air and maritime environment.
Both course’s design and method of instruction is such that no formal prior exposure to LOAC is required. It is, however, recommended that participants have a good working knowledge of naval systems, military aircraft, aircraft systems and the weapons and self-protection systems they carry. They must also have an understanding of the technical jargon, associated with the environment, in the working language of the Course.
The courses are of one week duration and are conducted in English.
